Visa, residence permit and CPR number
Before moving to Denmark, make sure you have the correct documents for your stay.
The rules depend on your nationality, how long you plan to stay and the type of study programme you are enrolled in. Always check the current requirements with the Danish immigration authorities.
Which rules apply to you?
EU/EEA or Swiss citizen
You may need an EU residence document if you stay in Denmark for more than three months.
Citizen from outside the EU/EEA
You will normally need a a visa and a residence permit to study in Denmark.
Staying for less than 90 days
Depending on your nationality, you may need a short-stay visa.

Students from outside the EU/EEA
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you will normally need a residence permit to study in Denmark.
You must apply through the Danish immigration authorities. The documentation you need depends on your circumstances and programme, so always follow the current instructions on New to Denmark.

What is a CPR number and do I need one?
A CPR number is your Danish personal identification number. You will use it for many important parts of everyday life in Denmark, including healthcare, communication with public authorities and other public and private services.
If you are moving to Denmark to study and plan to stay for more than three months, you will generally need to register with the Danish Civil Registration System (CPR).
To get a CPR number, you must normally have a permanent address in Denmark and documentation showing that you have the right to reside in Denmark. The requirements depend on your nationality and residence status.
How do I get a CPR number?
You register for a CPR number through the municipality where you live after you have arrived in Denmark. You may need to complete an online application and attend an appointment in person.
You will normally be asked to provide valid identification, documentation of your address in Denmark and documentation of your right to reside in Denmark. Check the requirements of your local municipality before applying.
What happens when I have a CPR number?
Once you are registered in the CPR system, you will have access to a range of public services in Denmark. You will also be registered for the Danish public healthcare system and assigned or asked to choose a general practitioner (GP).
Your CPR number is personal and should be kept secure. You will use it throughout your stay in Denmark when dealing with public authorities and many other services.
